PROFILE!

I've been profiled......i'm not sure for good or bad yet!
Before i leave Detroit, i change US dollars for Taiwan Dollars...and then on the way back i change back to US dollars. It just saves a lot of hassle, and besides, i get a guaranteed buy back rate with no second service charge. (always the frugal one!) Normally, i change less than $1,000 US. For this transaction they want to see your passport and boarding pass. No big deal.
Well, this time, the counter person says for $1,020, i could get a nice round number of NT$. So, i say sure! What the heck! Well a big heck! It seems that for transactions over $1,000 US, there is a whole nother set of forms to fill out including your SS#. I filled out the paperwork but left the SS# blank. oh no! - so sorry! must have! or no money! Next time, i'll make it $999. i'll show them!
It seems that it is the same the world over! I've been trying for 2 days now to get a local cell phone or SIM card! unless i am in the hotel room, i am really out of contact from home or here! On the Tsunami trip, Mike was able to track me down at the plant. but not for many hours later than they wanted to! So, i thought i would get a prepaid phone or sim card to at least carry with me. it seems the rest of the world has adopted a standard that the US won't. Oh well. so my cell phone is no good over here. usually i shut it off when i leave detroit and turn it back on when i get back. heaven forbid a person of evil intent, i don't want to say the "t" word, a little paranoia perhaps, should want to buy a single cell phone. well obviously, they've watched the tv shows like the sopranos and the wire, because only criminals want to buy prepaid cell phones! i went across the street from the hotel to the motorola store because i have a motorola phone. Well, i could buy a new phone for sure BUT! i could not buy a service plan! I do not have the "proper documentation"! Such as a National Health Insurance Card, Drivers License, Alien Resident Certificate Number, or Work Permit Number! (All Taiwanese documents!) So, what to do! why keep shopping of course. later i found a myphone store and they took a copy of my passport, and ohio drivers license. (These were faxed to the "main office"). they needed a local address and contact number. HA! at least they filled the form out with the address and phone number of the hotel i'm staying at. i paid my money and bought an extra fillup on the minutes. Bare boned service, no caller id, no voice mail, but i could call international! they said the service would be turned on in 2 hours. well, 2 hours later, there is a message displayed on my phone to contact my service provider. This morning i hoofed back to the store and the "main office" sent my paperwork back because my passport has michael james so my application had to have the same. after a lot of whiteout, i resigned as michael james and we faxed the docs back to the "main office". in 2 hours the service should be activated. Well, it's 8 hours later and still no service. WTF! In the morning i'll have F call and try and help me out! If i get this straightened out, i'll make sure you have the phone number!
I guess this has been a small taste of just how the world is changing that we do not normally see in our insulated world!

YOU DO THE MATH.....

Someone just filled their scooter gas tank and put 1.905 liters of gas in and paid NT$52. Hmmm..
YOU DO THE MATH:
1 Gallon = 3.785 Liters
US$1.00 = NT$30

Hmmmm..... click click click click click carry the one ding!

The answer is US$3.11/gallon regular US$3.50/gallon premium

....WHEN YOU PRY IT FROM MY COLD.....

You just never know what you're going to see when you're standing in your hotel window in the morning taking pictures..... (Click on the photo to enlarge)

I was intrigued... i didn't think that Taiwan had a gun lobby with Charlton Heston as its president.... Hmmmmm? i wondered if you could have her folder when you pried it from her dead hands? so i just had to go to their website...

HA! Its a realty agency - National Realty! Oh well, it's my imagination, my story.

SH*T - SHOWER - SHAVE!

I really am a person of simple tastes and needs! i only stayed here because i had to! the meetings i was having Friday were in the building next door. i mean really, all i need is a place to sleep, brush my teeth, take a shower and relieve myself! the rest of this is just fluff! $200 a night is really pretty stiff. i mean i check in after midnight and check out at 8 a.m.! Well, as long as we're here, you might as well see what it gets you! Click the link to see their story, keep reading for mine!

The wet bar! i don't know, it just doesn't seem like enough for a real party!

And the little fridge was just stuffed with liquid goodies! (I went downstairs, crossed the street to the 7/11 and and got something to drink (soda) and some munchies for less than what they had here!

And don't forget the electronic vault in the closet for all your valuables!

this i'll never understand.... the robe! yes, there are two of them hanging in the bathroom! i mean the bathroom is all marble, glass, and brass. but, just so the toilet flushes and hot water in the shower......

although, you don't get a view like this at the red roof! This is across the street at Taipei 101, the tallest building in the world! There are 5 floors of UP SCALE shopping, and i mean upscale! Although the food court is wonderful!

This is the rest of the view from my window of Taipei 101! What a view from on top!

This Trip!

Well, this trip certainly started out a whole lot better than the last trip! At least they weren't out on the tarmac shoveling snow to find the yellow lines! Hint!:if you leave after the morning rush, you walk right in and through security! This trip i'm travelling for at least 10 days! I've got everything packed even the kitchen sink! Work clothes, steel toe shoes, tools and a bunch of skivies!! did you know that there is a weight limit? my bag was 5 pounds over! so, that cost me an extra $50! i don't know what i would have left at home! oh well!

Sitting in that metal tube for as much as i have lately does earn you a free perk now and then. like a free first class upgrade on domestic flights. big deal.... the flight from CLE to DTE is 20 minutes air, 40 minutes of taxing to and from the gate! The other advantage is that this time i got a pass to the Northwest WorldClubs Lounge. Nice for the couple hour layover. A bit of your nose in the air, but still a place to sit out of the rush, work on my presentation, and watch the world go by.

All in the quiet lounge. With a view of the little worker ants passing by!
Once again, I'm taking care of business in Osaka and i hear them paging me again! this time i have a good idea what it's about! Yes!!! a bump to business class for the next (3 hr) leg of the trip! after the first 15 hours back in the cattle car class, i wasn't about to argue! when i get back i'll scan and post the menu and wine list! i just wanted to sleep, but the stewardess kept waking me up...would you like a cocktail....what would you like for dinner....would you like wine with dinner.....Jeeez, i had my eyes closed for a reason! the sign on my neck collar says wake for water landings.....maybe i should get something else for WHEN i have to fly 1st class.

We landed in a different terminal this time, so i wasn't ready to video the thermal scan again! dammit! but by this time all i wanted was out!
